American vs. British Oscars TV Coverage

And the winner for best culture shock is? My first ever UK viewing of an Oscars telecast this amazing year of 2024.

Growing up in the USA, our Oscars are like the Super Bowl. Jam packed with commercial after commercial. You take a bathroom visit and grab another drink or snack.

The UK coverage was a bunch of people sitting around discussing things like a casual local news team. No one too loud, nobody rude. People having a great time watching the Oscars along with you at home. You didn’t break from it as a viewer. I stuck around for the rest. The guests! The laughter! What is laughter again? We Americans quit laughing a decade ago when we decided to cancel everything with a smile.

I am absolutely jealous of all of you who grew up with this kind of TV. Somewhere in the world, people on television are friendly, or pretend to be. It felt good. No, amazing.

A bit belated. Sorry, I don’t always get around to my diary entries on schedule.
