Classes #40-44: Learning ZBrush...Sculpting My Cat! (Stan Winston School Diary #22)

Three of the four classes this session were spent learning about ZBrush. You can either download a free trial, or go the free route getting ZBrush Core Mini, the quick ZBrush for people new to sculpting. ZBrush is pretty cool in that, the mini version included, you can use it for 3D printing or creating .obj files.

With this session packed with hours of learning ZBrush, I have completed the Design pathway!

My model, Sheila, my lilac point Siamese cat. Isn’t she cute?

My 3D face sculpture of Sheila, ready for ancient Egypt. Sheila’s eye structure is a bit slanted, her head shape very rounded. Were I to pop this into an animated film, we could paint over it to get the full super Sheila markings pattern.

ZBrush terrified me before I tried it. The controls are slightly different, sure. The concept is similar to working with 3D sculpting in Mudbox.

From here, I watched but did not practice with the Light to Moderate Aging old age makeup class from the Hair Work pathway, taking notes on everything for the moments I needed to consult real makeup artists on my set giving people theatrical makeup for aging/weird stuff. The more you know: were you aware that partying too much the night before a film shoot stops makeup prosthetics from sticking well? Makeup generally cannot withstand alcohol seeping through the skin? You pick up little facts you don’t think about in every lesson on these if you really pay attention.

The pandemic has somewhat thrown me off and it feels like I am back on schedule with my learning progress. Get ready for October 2020’s FX classes update.
