Album Review: “Blue” by Joni Mitchell

Fans of Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department might think she is the first female singer/songwriter in mainstream music selling her lyrics above showmanship. Her well deserved success is because of women like Joni Mitchell. In her repertoire, there is no better place to begin than her Blue album, recorded during her relationship with James Taylor.

My old man
He’s a singer in the park
He’s a walker in the rain
He’s a dancer in the dark
We don’t need no piece of paper
From the city hall
Keeping us tied and true
No, my old man
Keeping away my blues
— Joni Mitchell

Fun fact: James Taylor plays the guitar on several tracks.

Legendary musicians of elder wisdom were once everyday young people filled with life. They dreamed of futures with new loves and dealt with broken hearts. Blue is a real diary, ticking like clockwork from one emotion to another.
